Factor Treatment in Hemophilia
The body’s natural clotting process is carefully balanced, and your infused factor works within this balanced system to keep you protected from bleeds. During the natural blood clotting process, a number of specific proteins, called clotting factors, are turned on, or activated, in a precise order to form a clot and stop a bleed. When you have hemophilia, one of these factors, most commonly FVIII or FIX, is missing from your blood.
Your infused factor treatment temporarily replaces the missing factor, and becomes activated and controlled by the body’s natural blood-clotting process. Once a clot has been formed, the factors are quickly turned off, or inactivated. These on and off steps are important to help you generate enough thrombin to make a proper clot.
